The Holiness Union Church traces its roots back to rural Sweden in the late nineteenth century. Established in 1887 as an interdenominational mission society, it later formalized into a denomination. Founding leaders Edvard Hedin and CJA Kihlstedt were instrumental in shaping its early doctrines, emphasizing the priesthood of all believers, the authority of local assemblies, and the freedom of conscience and religion. Missionaries arrived around 1890 in Natal, initiating work on the South Coast, which soon spread to the Midlands and Zululand. Initially known as the Swedish Holiness Union Zulu Mission, it evolved into the Holiness Union Church in South Africa. Pioneers like Rev. G. Monson, assisted by Rev. Paul Mkhabela and others, established churches in the Lowveld, Highveld, and Gauteng regions, fostering community growth and spiritual development.
